P2(c) Following Safe Working Practices
Meaning: Following safe working practice means to follow the risk assessment and how it is applied to my project.
Purpose: The purpose of this section is to show how I followed the safe working practice.
Here is the risk assessment of my project, I will explain below of I have followed the risk assessment properly.
Slammed by the door
This is the first risk from the risk assessment - Get slammed by the door. It would be very dangerous because the door is very heavy and it can close by itself, we also have a lot of door scenes in the project, therefore we must be careful.
As I have written in the risk assessment, I would remind the actors and crews to be careful while closing the doors.
Bumped into chairs and tables
This is the second risk from the risk assessment, there are lots of tables and chairs in the classroom, and they have really sharp corners, therefore it is very easy to get hurt or injured. Therefore, before filming, I asked my crews to be careful, and move the tables away after filming.
This is the third risk from the risk assessment, there is a slightly change from the location, I changed it from the small common room to the kitchen, because the smoke from the candles would trigger the smoke scensor and cause a fire alarm. Also, due to the limited space of the small common room, this is also the reason why I changed the location.
As this scene includes fire from the candle, therefore I asked my teacher from Austen House to lit the candles up for me. Also, I reminded my crews not to get too close to the fire, so the fire do not burn them or hurt them.
This is the fourth risk from the risk assessment, it is because the hoovering machine is very heavy and big, it might hurt somebody when the actress is hoovering the floor. Therefore I asked the actress to walk away from the vacuum machine and always stand behind it, so she can see where it is and not pump into it.
This is the fifth risk from the risk assessment, this scene occurs in the dining hall, where there is a lot of people walking around, in order to do the shooting smoothly, I chose to do it in a weekend, because there will be less people during the day as people usually go to town, so reduces the chance of affecting people with their lunch. Also, I have asked the actresses to take less food, as the tray is very big and the plates are quite heavy, therefore if they take less food, the weight will be less, therefore reduces the risk of falling plates on the floor and getting injured.
This is the sixth risk from the risk assessment, this scene originally occurs in Elfick house's common room, however I found out that it is more convenient to film in Austen House, as we have a dinning area for the students. Also, the scene here is quite dangerous, the actress had to pick up a knife and it is relatively sharp comparing to the other knife, is because I want to create a more effective scene to the audiences. In Austen House, we know more about the utensils in the kitchen, while in Elfick house we do not what they have or what they don't have, therefore filming in Austen House is a better option.
As this scene is very dangerous, therefore I asked the actress to handle the knife in care, and always face the knife to the opposite side of her, so she can pick it up with hurting herself, and also reduces the chance of the knife injuring her. I immediately put the knife back into the kitchen after using it, as I do not want them to injure my crews accidentally.
From the evidence above, I believed I followed the safe working practices quite well and am well-understood the risk from my risk assessment, to secure the safety of my crews and actress.
