P3(b) Producing and Reviewing an Off Line Edit
Meaning: Producing and reviewing an off line edit means selections of shots into order and without applying any effects.
Purpose: The purpose of this section is show the audiences how I put my videos in sequence without applying any effects and show changes if any of the clips are different from the storyboard that I have originally planned.
This is the editing block, where I drag my original clips into these bars. It is very useful because there are many video and audio columns, that allow me to edit it with more columns and create overlapping and allow me to edit it more smoothly. Also, I could press the "vision" button at the side, which allows me to close the vision of the clips of that column, this is also very useful as I could watch the video with more options, same for the audio.
In my clips, they include sound too, therefore this columns are very important to me as sometimes I do not want the sound of the clip however wanting the video, therefore I could place the unwanted audio into one column and press the "audio" button of that column, in order to mute it.
Here shows the 2 main screen of the Adobe Premium Pro, these 2 screens are very useful for me too.
The left screen allows me to watch the original raw material, such as the original clips that I have filmed from the camera. So you could compare the raw material with the edited video, and also reviewing the content of the unedited video.
The second screen allows me to watch my edited video, including the transition effect, audio effect, and combined videos.
I really like this because it can help me to edit my video smoothly, and also I can also see the comparison between the edited video and the original clips.
This is how the whole Adobe Premium Pro looks, it occupies the whole screen while using, and all the screen and columns are suitable in size, including the raw material bars.
Sometimes, we do not follow the original plan, we do make some changes to it.
I am going to show what I have changed in my video from my original plan step by step.
Originally, my idea was to show Carmen wearing her shoes and her mom next to her, only showing her lower part body. This is to show the audiences of what the scene is about and what the actors are doing, also giving them ideas of where the actress are and what is she doing through the background, costume and movements. However when I was filming it, I realised that it is very hard to film 2 of the actress together and filming Carmen doing her shoelace, therefore, I decided just to film Carmen doing her shoelace and recording Annie's voice at the back, so audiences could also notice what Carmen is doing and knowing that Annie is acting as her mother in the video. This angle also makes audiences focus on Carmen, so they could notice every detail of the scene that I would like them to notice.
The original idea of this scene is to film Carmen waving at her mom outside Austen House, also showing some trees and the entrance door, creating a sweet feeling of a mother waving goodbye to her child in the morning and send her off to school, because at this moment Carmen is still a very pure girl. However, the weather was not really nice on that day, and the sun was going down, there wasn't enough natural light to make this scene nice, therefore I decided to film this scene indoor. In here I filmed Carmen waving goodbye to her mom and also showing the arm of Annie, waving back to Carmen, this could also shows the idea of a mother sending her child off to school, at this angle it could also makes audiences focus on Carmen's face expression and body movement, therefore this scene worths the change.
This scene actually matches quite well with the storyboard, we can compare them from the screenshots above. My idea was to show the model walking with a following shot, and also showing the background with Austen House and some scenery. However, the camera will shivers very much if I film follow her, therefore I decided to film her from far away and her walking towards the camera, and it turns out quite well and effective, as it gives out the idea of the actor walking to school with her uniform, and she is looking at the views on her way to school.
My original idea of this scene was to follow the actress from in front so the camera angle is also medium shot of the actress, however it is too hard to film her with clear clips and without the camera shivering, therefore I decided to just place the tripod and film as the actress act. In here, I still trying to keep my original idea of showing the model entering the classroom and greets her classmates. So in order to do this, I filmed her opening the door, and Sophia saying "Hey Carmen", so she could respond to her with a smile, showing her nice personality, and also makes audiences focus on Carmen, knowing that she is the main character of this video.
In this scene, Carmen is getting food from the dinning hall with Sophia. Comparing to the storyboard, we can see that I followed the original idea quite well, as it also gives the idea of the girls getting food in the dinning hall and showing the audiences that they are having lunch. The only different between the 2 is the camera angle, as I just wanted to film Carmen at the beginning, however it is too hard to do so due to the position problem, therefore I decided to film Sophia in as well, so that audiences could see both of their face expression, and their body movement, also showing the plates and food in the dinning hall, emphasising the idea of they are in the dining hall.
In this scene, I wanted to film Carmen eating her food and chatting with her friends happily in the dining hall, with a direct shot of her and showing a little of the body part of her friend, showing her presence in the video. However, I found it better to film Carmen with over the shoulder shot, also due to the seats problems in the dining hall, I decided to film her with this kind of shot, with this kind of camera angle, I could also show the presence of Sophia, which gives idea of the girls talking and having lunch together, at the same time showing Carmen's face expression and upper part of her body. So, even it is slightly different with the original camera angle, the idea was still the same.
This is the homework scene, it appears twice in the video, one showing the "Before Carmen" and one showing the "After Carmen". I wanted to film her directly with her face facing the camera, however we can see that her desk is sticked to the wall, which makes it impossible to film in this kind of camera angle. Therefore, I have decided to film from her right, one is due to the space of the room, the other one is due to from this camera angle the audiences could see the surrounding of the model, that she is working in her room, the bed behind could suggest to the audiences that she is working the room. As the idea of the scene did not change, I think only changing the camera angle does not really affect the storyboard, and I still follow it.
This is the reading scene. I wanted to film this scene is to show the idea of Carmen uses her leisure time to read before getting a smart phone. I wanted to film her with direct angle too, however due to the limited space of the room, I had to film in this angle shown in the screenshot above. But I found this kind of angle quite effective, as it can show the whole body of the actress, what she is doing, and the small decorations of her room, makes the scene warmer and cosier.
This is the guitar scene, this scene is filmed to show that Carmen plays guitar during her leisure time. In this scene, it follows the storyboard quite well, as it is filmed in direct angle, and she is sitting on the floor, the only thing that is a bit different is that it is showing too much things other than the actor in the scene. But in the other hand, I find this quite effective, because the bed and the closet surrounded her also gives an idea to the audiences that she is playing the guitar in her room, and she is sitting on the floor, which matches the description of the storyboard.
This scene is when Carmen's mother asked her to do the hoovering, and observe how she does it, this is one of the key scene when Annie realised that her daughter is addicted to her smart phone. This scene follows the idea, however, it didn't really follow the camera angle, I wanted to show only the lower part of Annie's body so she does not have to expose her face, however I find it more effective if I show how Annie reacts to Carmen's reaction, therefore I decided to film her face too.
This scene is when Annie took Carmen's phone away because she is over addicted to it. This scene is very similar to the storyboard, we can see from the comparisons, as Annie snatches her phone directly and stood up, this completely presented the idea that Annie was cross with Carmen. I think this scene follows the storyboard pretty much.
This scene is also one of the key scene of the video, it is because this is the consequence of the video, and it gives the idea to the audiences what I want to say, is smart phone affects us really much, especially to teenagers like Carmen. Although it does not really match the camera angle of the storyboard, however the idea was still the same. I could't use the same camera angle, because I have to show the food on the table, and showing that they are having dinner, and also when the actress stands and walk towards the other side, the knife is more obvious in front of the camera, showing what Carmen is going to do in the next step, therefore I think this is more effective than the original camera angle.
